programme note:

Three Dirges was written in August 1993 while I was in residence at the Marlboro Music Festival. Each movement, while different in material and character, has a similar harmonic idea woven into it. This is particularly obvious at each end of the first movement, and the end of the second and third. The first movement is mysterious and rhapsodic, the second is a faster moto perpetuo, while the third is the simplest, sounding calm and reflective. The work is dedicated to the memory of Saeed Montazery, who died in March, 1993.
